Pet of the Week: Diabetes

Cosmo the Cat

Dear iVillage Pet of the Week:

I am enclosing a story about my brave cat Cosmo. I think once you read about him, you'll agree he's quite an inspirational cat.

Owner: Lynette Petendrée (Lynettep on iVillage)

Cat: Cosmo, domestic shorthair, male, five years old

Cosmo was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago. He had been drinking large amounts of water and urinating frequently over the past few months. One Sunday morning we found Cosmo curled up into a ball in the bathroom sink. He was alive, but had no strength to move.

The vet said he was severely dehydrated, lost six pounds, and was in the beginning stages of a diabetic coma. We left him so they could start fluid and insulin therapy. They shaved his neck to feed him through a catheter. They shaved his leg to take blood every few hours. I visited him every day and know he recognized me because the look in his eyes would change. A glimmer of hope still sparkled. I'd say to him, "You're going to be OK. You have to fight this thing, and you'll be better. I love you." The vet had more bad news: Cosmo had a liver infection. A new tube, with antibiotics, was inserted. I never lost faith and told him to keep fighting. By the second week, Cosmo stood up to greet me. They got his blood sugar down to 400. Originally it was 1,200 (90 - 200 is normal). He was going to live.

People who don't understand why we have rearranged our lives and spent so much money on our cat have said "Why don't you just put him to sleep?" I could not "put to sleep" any creature who has fought so bravely to live.

Cosmo is on a new diet and takes insulin shots twice daily. He is energetic and is still a fighter!

Thanks,

--Lynette
