Courtney Love and teenage daughter Frances Bean Cobain have a rocky relationship, to say the least -- and now, Love is working through their mother-daughter issues on Twitter. On Sunday, perhaps triggered by "Happy Mother's Day!" tweets from fans and friends, Love wrote over 60 messages directed at Bean (whom she is legally prohibited from contacting, thanks to a December restraining order).
Love begins her stream of messages by saying she saw a photo of Frances at the music festival Coachella, and that the boy in the pic with her "looks sweet and like your dad actually." Then around 4 a.m., she starts in with the unsolicited relationship advice:
"i really hope that boy is as nice as his sweet face, cos iff not ill get him, your just like me in almost every way and i know you hate it, theres plenty of fish in the sea lining up for both of us who will treat us like princesses& not like 2nd class citizens, or damaged goods. if he cant suit up and have a balanced perspective and if hes just blindly being a beta male... i will give him one of my very special looks reserved for those whose blood needs to turn to ice..."
And so on. In dozens of wee-hours tweets, Love warns her daughter against "overtexting," buying herself jewelry, and waiting for a man to "save" her. Clearly Love doesn't actually know the particulars of her daughter's relationship, and is spouting pseudo-wisdom based on her own love life. For sure, she's oversharing. But does the rock star mama really have a choice? For the past decade, Frances Bean has been the subject of a nasty custody dispute between Love and Wendy O'Connor (mother of the late Kurt Cobain); Love lost legal custody of her daughter in December, at which time Bean filed a restraining order that's still in effect. If the Hole singer contacts her daughter directly, she'll be in trouble with the law. So really, going to a public forum to reach out to her only child is not quite as crazy as it may seem.
For what it's worth, Love does seem to realize that she overstepped her boundaries. On Tuesday, she tweeted her remorse, saying, "i want to apologise to FBC for giving her man boy advice on f*cking Twitter." As for Frances, she hopped onto Twitter for the first time in months on May 9th. Her message: "happy mother's day...?"
