Creative Children's Birthday Party Ideas

Kids' birthday party necessities: balloons, cake, good wishes and these tips for throwing a great birthday bash.

Decorations
Let the birthday boy's or girl's preferences be your guide for decorations. What is his or her favorite color, animal, game, place, TV show? A theme as simple as a color can transform your party place. For example, if you pick blue, decorate with balloons, streamers and flowers in all shades of blue. Replace your white lightbulbs with blue ones, and hang strings of blue-colored lights from your ceiling.

If you're planning a sit-down meal, let the dining area be your focal point: Use lots of little card tables, cover them with bright tablecloths, and design creative place settings with construction paper and crafting scissors. If it's sunny and you have outdoor space, plan a picnic. Put up a badminton net, or set up a game of croquet. You can get more or less elaborate depending on your guests' ages. Your birthday boy or girl will let you know if your ideas are cool or lame.

Mini crayon sets, tiny notebooks, small decks of cards—these tiny party favors earn big smiles! Add stickers, glow-in-the-dark rubber balls, candy, temporary tattoos, toy cars and hair barrettes to fill out favor bags. The birthday boy or girl shouldn't be the only person opening gifts—wrap some of the party favors in festive wrapping paper to add more excitement. If the party has a theme, carry that over to the party favors as well.
