Hugh Hefner's bad break-up with fiancée Crystal Harris just got worse. Not only does Hef have to deal with a broken heart, he has to see her splashed all over the July issue of Playboy -- billed as "Mrs. Crystal Hefner," no less!
In an embarrassing coincidence, the magazine -- which features a mostly-naked Harris (wearing naught but Hef's signature smoking jacket) on the cover -- hits shelves just three days after Crystal, 25, called off her wedding to Hefner, 85. The headline reads "America's Princess: Introducing Mrs. Crystal Hefner," and would have been apropos if the ceremony happened as planned on Saturday. (It's too bad they didn't have time to change that headline to "Runaway Bride.")
So what happened, exactly, to lead to this awkward wedding cancellation? Harris told Ryan Seacrest's radio show that everything was moving too fast.
"For a while I've been having second thoughts about everything," Harris confesses. "I haven't really been at peace with myself lately. I didn't think it was really fair to him. It was all happening too fast for me... Was this what I wanted?"
Harris swears that the decision to split up was ultimately "mutual" and -- contrary to rumors -- went down without any big drama. "There was no fight," she says. "We sat down and we talked about it."
Still, there are all kinds of crazy stories flying around about what really happened. There's speculation that Harris was cheating on Hef with Dr. Phil McGraw's son. Harris' rep denies this accusations, and Crystal tells Seacrest that she's "not seeing someone else." The Twitterverse, meanwhile, is wondering if Harris only stayed engaged to Hef long enough to promote her single "Club Queen," which dropped the day before the break-up -- and in fact, Hefner re-tweeted one of the comments to this effect. (It seems he deleted it, but you can read it here.)
Then there's the most jaw-dropping rumor of all: that Harris was telling media outlets she would dump Hefner at the altar for half a million dollars. Page Six reports that Hef's fiancée was offering to put on the dress, walk down the aisle, and then say in front of everyone that she couldn't go through with it. Knowing the wedding was going to be filmed for a TV special, she allegedly figured she could sell the dramatic event to the highest bidder. The plan fell through, according to the report, because no one was willing to match her price.
But could the reason for breaking off the wedding be something much simpler? "This isn't the lifestyle for me, multiple girls all around," Harris said to Seacrest. Harris adds that Hefner -- who has been comforted by Girls Next Door Bridget Marquardt, Kendra Wilkinson and Holly Madison since the split -- was only marrying her "because he thought it was what I wanted." Guess you can't ask a leopard to change his spots -- or a playboy to change his smoking jacket.
