Cuba Gooding Jr.: My Dad Asked Tom Cruise: "Are You Gay?"

Gooding Jr. recalls his father's encounter with Cruise on the Jerry Maguire set in 1996 -- and reveals how Tom handled it

We all have those moments when our parents say something that makes us cringe. In Cuba Gooding Jr.'s case, one such moment involved his dad and his Jerry Maguire costar Tom Cruise.

Cuba Gooding Sr. was vising the set of Jerry Maguire back in 1996 when he flat-out asked Cruise about his sexual orientation.

"He gave Tom Cruise a hug and said, 'I love you man. Now seriously, are you gay or not?'" Gooding Jr., 44, recalled during an appearance on England's The Graham Norton Show, which airs Friday. "I almost fainted. And I thought, 'Please Lord, let me disappear."

Fortunately, Cruise -- who was married to Nicole Kidman at the time -- was a good sport about the whole thing. "Tom just laughed and said, 'No,'" Gooding recounted.

Gooding also talked about his famous "Show me the money!" mantra from the film, a line Gooding says he is now sick of hearing people recite.

"It doesn't go away. I get it all the time. I wish I had a wand that would make people disappear whenever they say it," Gooding said. "It's hard especially when some drunk guy in a bar asks, and finally you say it and he says, 'No, say it like you said it in the movie!'"
