Interested in abolishing childhood hunger? From now until July 24, contributing to this cause is as simple as turning on the oven.
Through the One Million Cupcake Challenge, organized by baking giant Duncan Hines and hunger-tackling charity Share Our Strength, bakers are encouraged to use Duncan Hines's mixes to create frosted sweets and then host a Great American Bake Sale in their community. All proceeds are donated to Share Our Strength, and for the real icing on the cake, Duncan Hines will match the donation of the highest fundraising team each week through the completion of the Challenge. The goal, per the contest's name, is for one million cupcakes to be baked this sale season.
As if all of the above weren't incentive enough, five winners will be flown to LA, where they'll have star-ogling seats on the red carpet at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards this September. After bakers have registered and completed their Great American Bake Sales, they can earn an entry towards this grand prize by sending in the bar codes from Duncan Hines boxes. (Odds can be increased by hosting a really large bake sale, and sending in bar codes from multiple boxes.)
If you're interested in joining the One Million Cupcake Challenge, Share Our Strength has put together a fantastic resource center with info on everything from selecting ideal bake sale locations and designing flyers to proper pricing and getting your sale social media attention. If you're short on recipes, Duncan Hines has dozens of creative cupcake recipes including springy Lemon Cooler Cupcakes and sweet Cupcake Strawberries.
Whether you've got a charitable soul, are itching to go to the Emmy's, or simply love baking, we think this sale is a terrific—and very sweet—idea. And with Memorial Day, Flag Day, Father's Day and July Fourth coming around the corner, we can think of lots of colorful cupcake occasions in the near future. (Then again, we never need a reason for enjoying a cupcake!)
