Like it or not, certain celebs are inextricably linked with their boobs:
Pam Anderson
Dolly Parton
Jessica Simpson
Janet Jackson (remember this?)
While most of these bosom buddies are known for their gravity-defying abundance, some celebrities are also famous for their lack of frontloading. Famous flat chesters include Paris Hilton, Keira Knightley, Debra Messing, Calista Flockhart and Kate Hudson.
But a new photo of Goldie’s little girl in a bikini has tongues wagging and fingers pointing. Why? Because it appears that Kate has upgraded from a small A to a small B. As a result, blogs are crying, "Say it ain't so, Kate!"
My question: Why the uproar?
The 31-year-old mom is known for rocking a mostly bra-less wardrobe, and I’ll admit, I've always thought she was a brilliant ambassador for flat-chestedness. She can get away with wearing gorgeous, low-cut gowns without looking vulgar and can rock backless dresses, unmarred by a bra strap. I think that because she’s been so unapologetic about her As, seeming to revel in their teeny size, that the thought of her getting implants -- however modest they may be -– seems, in a way, hypocritical. And for those of us who happen to be more Audrey Hepburn than Marilyn Monroe, to see someone with whom we identified, body image-wise, opt to surgically alter her physique makes us feel less OK with ourselves.
And while my gut reaction upon hearing about Kate Hudson’s possible implants wasn't positive (I feel like there are so few strong body image role models for women to look to as it is, without dragging plastic surgery into the mix), I soon realized that to be a feminist, as I purport to do, I have to respect other women for their decisions, even if they might not be the same ones I myself would make. If she did, in fact, get implants (remember, this was just one photo -– she might have just been PMSing), and going up a size makes her happier or feel more confident, then good for her. Maybe, like another famous Hudson and her curves, Kate didn’t enjoy being the poster child for small-bustedness. While many of us seen a bit of ourselves in images of her looking lean and lithe in low-cut cowls with nary a bit of cleavage to be found, images of her in gowns like this make headlines, sometimes with nasty comments attached.
So if the notoriously flat-chested actress did, in fact, get implants…let’s let her be. It’s not like she did this to herself. (Although if she had…again, it’s her body and she’s the one who needs to live in it.) A better place to focus our attention would be at the larger societal factors that force women to feel less-than or unfeminine simply because they can’t fill out a C-cup, and hope that the trickle-down effect leaves fewer women seeking solace in a scalpel and silicone.
