Born in Alabama, Cynthia spent 25 years in New York City working as a model before moving to Atlanta. Her downstairs sitting room is a mix of all three places. "I love that I have a picture of a New York building in this room," she says. "It reminds me of my humble beginnings there. I went from being a model running around with no money, excited to get my mother's care packages, to being a diva deluxe." She bought the birdcage on the table for $4 at an Alabama yard sale and then spray painted it black. "It's one of the things people say is most cool," she says.
The couch and mirror are more recent acquisitions. Cynthia's husband, Peter Thomas, is a restaurateur. When he recently shuttered one of his eateries, Cynthia was happy to give some of its furnishings a new home. "Our house got an upgrade!" she says. "I was like, 'Oh, I'm so sorry we can't keep the restaurant ... but can I have that couch?"
