Would You Let Your 6-Year-Old Drink Wine? This Dad Does

It's pretty much a rule of parenthood that giving your kid milk is good. Giving your kid alcohol is bad.

But what if you just offer up a little sip of your adult beverage now and again? Parenting magazine editor Shawn Bean writes that he has been giving his 6-year-old son a bit of wine, served eye-dropper style from a straw, for several years, noting that his boy has a "hyper-acute" sense of taste.

"To me, letting Tanner take a sip was a way to demystify it, to normalize it," he writes. "Because as a society, we really don't know how we feel about it. ... It was also supposed to be innocent. Those little sips were not about alcoholism or law breaking or delinquency or college fraternities or hanging from chandeliers. It was a little something for him to try."

So, it's not like Bean is bent on getting his boy drunk, and he even concludes that the pint-sized wine tastings will likely come to an end. But, still, is it odd that they started in the first place?
