The Daily Feed: DIY Airplane Snacks

Roughly 41 million people will travel by air this holiday season, according to Star Talk, the blog of the Fort Worth Star Telegram. In addition to carting gifts, books, and magazines, many passengers will be carting something else: snacks.

If you’ve traveled recently, you know the reason: selections are limited, not always healthful, and frequently overpriced.  Bring these portable snacks from home to keep your belly happy in the air.

For morning flights, think granola bars, homemade bran muffins, oatmeal in a cup (ask the flight attendant for hot water), sliced apples, and a just-ripe banana.

For afternoon/evening flights, pack cheese sticks, trail mix (toss in a few chocolate chips for kicks), clementines, grapes, pita chips, and small sandwiches with your favorite fixings. Throw in an oatmeal cookie with some dried fruit for dessert. (Here’s my favorite recipe.)

Keep in mind that you won’t have access to a fridge, so avoid mayo, sushi, or anything else that must be kept cold should your flight be delayed. And do your fellow passengers a favor and skip garlicky or potent-smelling edibles -- anything likely to offend those with delicate noses.
