The Daily Feed: Porridge—a Retro but Ideal Winter Breakfast

According to this piece in The Observer, Madonna, Nelson Mandela, Nigella Lawson, Nicole Kidman and Bill Gates all share a fondness for the same breakfast food: porridge. And who can blame them? Whether prepared with oats or grains like wheat, corn, barley or rice, a comforting bowl of hot cereal holds near-universal appeal and has for ages.

But just because porridge sounds old-fashioned doesn’t mean it has to be dowdy. Standard mix-ins like almonds and raisins provide an acceptable measure of crunch and chew, but moist Medjool dates, toasted coconut, and sauteed apples can all be folded into a bowl of soft, cooked grains and splashed with milk. Here are some more combinations to consider:

* Breakfast polenta with honey, pine nuts, and currants

* Steel-Cut Oats with Cocoa and Hazelnuts

* Quinoa with cinnamon, pecans and agave nectar

 And who says porridge has to be sweet?  Check out this recipe for wheat berries with sesame, soy sauce, and scallions.

 So the next time you cook up some grains for dinner, make a little extra for breakfast -- and leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy it.
