Gifts with whimsy and sparkle tend most to delight, but here’s one practical, no-nonsense present to give loved ones this season: a set of glass storage containers.
Before you bah-humbug, let me explain: recent studies have linked bisphenol A (BPA), a specific type of plastic, to several kinds of cancer, behavior problems, and even early puberty, among other ailments. New York Times’ op-ed columnist Nicholas Kristof explained the health risks further here.
So without being alarmist, I suggest it’s time, once and for all, to stop heating up leftovers in plastic containers and to keep them out of the dishwasher. Better yet, go glass. High-quality glass storage containers won’t discolor or warp, are dishwasher safe, (and most) can be used in the freezer, the fridge, and, yes, in the microwave. (Always check labels to make sure.) Many brands look great, too.
If you’re still wedded to plastic, please: wash all food containers by hand and always transfer food to a microwave-safe dish before heating. And unless they’re labeled BPA-free, follow Kristof’s lead and toss out any containers numbered 3, 6, or 7 pronto.
