The Daily Feed: Veggie Mondays in San Francisco

The San Francisco Examiner reported this week that Mondays will now be known as Vegetarian Day, or Veg Day, thanks to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The group aims to promote a greener diet among residents the first workday of every week. 

While some praise the move, not everyone is applauding. On the Examiner’s website, one commenter called the resolution “nonsense” and another quoted the Bible, stating that, according to “God’s plan,” humans are supposed to eat animals.  A third offered this: “What happens in my kitchen is no more [the City government’s] business than what happens in my bedroom!!”

San Francisco is known for being controversially ahead of the curve on initiatives related to health and wellness, but this time it’s following a trend already well-established elsewhere. The Baltimore City Schools, for example, have promoted vegetarian cafeteria meals on Mondays for years. And the nonprofit group Meatless Monday, affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has been encouraging Americans to cut back on animal protein once a week since 2003. Their goal is to reduce meat consumption by 15 percent to “improve personal health and the health of our planet.”
