Dan Barber: Chef, Blue Hill Restaurant

Dan Barber will serve up nutrition tips for the iVillage Get Moving Now Community Challenge. He is a member of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, is an award-winning, New York-based chef and co-owner of Blue Hill restaurant where he features locally and sustainable farm-grown foods. He began farming and cooking for family and friends at Blue Hill Farm in the Berkshires. It was there that he was first introduced to and gained respect for locally grown and seasonal produce. Barber works to blur the line between the dining experience and the educational, bringing the principles of good farming directly to the table. His efforts to create a consciousness about the effects of everyday food choices have led him to numerous projects including serving on Harvard Medical School's Center for Health and the Global Environment advisory board and working with such organizations as the Kellogg Foundation, New York City's Greenmarkets, and Slow Food USA.

In 2009, Time Magazine featured him in their "Time 100,” an annual list of the world’s most influential people. Barber has also been featured in the New Yorker, CBS Sunday Morning, House and Garden, and Martha Stewart Living; his writing has been incorporated into the annual "Best Food Writing" anthology for the past five years. Additionally, in spring of 2006, Barber received the James Beard award for Best Chef: New York City, and in 2009 was named James Beard's Outstanding Chef.
