How they did: Before the couple's final dance, viewers were reminded that Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani had fudged their freestyle when they were partners back in season 8, and that this failure has stuck in Dovolani's craw ever since. This time around, said Rycroft in her pre-dance interview, "I don't want to play it safe…The trophy's on the line." Happily, they pulled off a great dance. The lifts were dead on, the movement was fluid and lyrical, and the judges were besotted. "Fantastic extension, beautiful lines," raved Len Goodman. "You were a gem." True enough: Rycroft literally sparkled in her silky white and sequined costume. "Freestyle jackpot!" cried Carrie Ann Inaba.
