Recap: Dancing with the Stars - Samba and Rumba

The featured dances on tonight's DWTS were the samba and the rumba. Can our celeb-dancers bring the romance of the rumba and the vivaciousness of the samba to the dance floor? Let's find out!

First to take on the samba are Mario and Karina Smirnoff. Mario displayed some serious hip action and the audience—and the judges—loved it. They thought Mario did a fantastic job with his movements, and that the party vibe of the dance suited him. Score: 27

Priscilla Presley and Louis van Amstel took to the dance floor next with the rumba. It's a slow dance, with a lot of fancy-type walking. Priscilla did an impressive split, but she made a few noticeable mistakes. The judges, of course, caught every one. Bruno thought Priscilla played the part well as usual but the walks exposed the faults. Carrie Ann pointed out that Priscilla was concentrating too much, and Len announced he was disappointed with the lack of spontaneity in the dance. Score: 21

Can Marissa Janet Winokur and partner Tony Dovalani do a better job of impressing the judges? Their paso doble scored good marks last week, and this week they did the samba. Carrie Ann thought the dance was Marissa's best routine so far, and Len gave kudos to the clever choreography and lovely moves. And Bruno? He says Marissa had "more shakes than a cocktail bar" and "more bounce than a beach ball." So I guess he loved it. Score: 24

Cristian de la Fuente and Cheryl Burke tackled the rumba next, doing a decent job on the dance floor. Len says the performance was "good, but not fantastic" and noted that Cristian's arms are sometimes too stiff, and sometimes too soft. Bruno and Carrie Ann disagreed on the level of the pair's chemistry but both agree that it was an okay performance. Score: 23

Marlee Matlin and

Fabian Sanchez

followed with their samba. Marlee was graceful as usual, but she took a few stumbles. The judges notice, of course, but everyone agree that Marlee is an inspiration. Indeed, she is. Score: 22

Frontrunners Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas got to dance the rumba. Will Kristi hold on to her leading lady status? You betcha. The judges called her and Mark's rumba fabulous, and applauded Kristi for taking risks. Bruno called Kristi a "South Pacific pearl... stupendous." Score: 29

Up next was Shannon Elizabeth, who got a 10 from Len last week, Derek Hough, who we learned came down with a bout of food poisoning earlier today. But they still danced their little butts off. It was a lively dance, but Shannon looked a bit awkward. Len said the dance was good "but not good enough." There was not enough impact, and not enough hip action, apparently. Bruno said the timing was also a bit off. Carrie noted Shannon's "fiery personality" but agreed it was a bit awkward. Score: 23

NFL star Jason Taylor and partner Edyta Sliwinska attacked the rumba next, and the judges (well, a couple of them) swooned. Bruno said Jason "has the look of a love god," while Carrie Ann said they gave a fantastic performance. And Len? He wasn't as enthusiastic. Score: 27
