Daniel Radcliffe: My Gay Sex Scene Is Not "Shocking"

Starring in Kill Your Darlings, the Harry Potter actor says he didn't have time to be self-conscious about filming the racy scene

The world may still see Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, but the actor sees himself as a regular guy... who is comfortable enough to have sex on camera. In his latest role, as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, Radcliffe has some racy love scenes with another man. And he's not sure why people are making such a big deal out of it.

"It's interesting that it's deemed shocking," Radcliffe, 23, told MTV News. "For me, there's something very strange about that. Because we see straight sex scenes all the time. We've seen gay sex scenes before. I don't know why a gay sex scene should be any more shocking than a straight sex scene."

The British actor added that he didn't understand why kissing a man in Kill Your Darlings is being treated as a bigger deal than his nude scene in Broadway's Equus. Not only was he stabbing horses while naked onstage; he was still a teenager at the time!

"What weirded me out the most last night was people were asking me all these questions about the gay sex scenes. I was like, 'You know I did Equus?" Radcliffe pointed out. "Some people are asking me questions like this is a more shocking subject, which is so strange."

As for the actual experience of shooting the scene, Radcliffe said it went by too quickly for him to be self-conscious about it. "We didn't really have time to feel awkward," he said with a laugh."I think we shot the thing in about an hour, hour and a half or something like that. You just kind of had to get it done. I'm trying to avoid using phrasing that could slip into innuendo! It was...new."

Kill Your Darlings
premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday night. Not only did the film give Radcliffe a chance to do his first real on-screen sex scene, it also landed him a new off-screen love interest: co-star Erin Darke. The two were seen cuddling and kissing at the premiere party, and several people who worked on the movie told People that they were together.
