Daryl Hannah was one of the biggest stars of the '80s (Splash, Roxanne, Steel Magnolias), then made a surprising comeback in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films. But despite her success, Hannah, 49, is a Hollywood dropout these days: living full-time in the Rocky Mountains, working rarely, and devoting herself to environmental causes. Now, a new interview in the U.K.'s Daily Mail reveals what made the blond beauty turn her back on Hollywood.
- Walking the red carpet. The shy actress disliked the ritual so much, she once had herself injected with sedatives before walking in front of the cameras. She also says she feels too "socially awkward" to do talk shows.
- Too much cosmetic surgery. "There are so many people in L.A. who have had cosmetic surgery and they all look like Muppets," says Hannah, who swears she hasn't had work done.
- Lazy politics. Hannah, who once dated the late John F. Kennedy Jr., doesn't believe in voting along party lines, and thinks actors should use their power for good causes; she's been arrested twice at sit-ins for environmental action.
- Too much money. Daryl Hannah shops at thrift stores, and says tabloid attention makes everyone in Hollywood too greedy: "There are so many magazines featuring pictures of celebrities in a different outfit every time that it fuels discontentment in the rest of us, making us crave new clothes, new make-up, new hairstyles, which isn’t good for us or the environment."
Daryl Hannah now spends her time doing things like teaching 7-year-olds about endangered species, and she sounds quite happy. But it makes us wonder: Would an actress like Hannah -- who's dynamite onscreen, but hates interviews and won't dress up for the paparazzi -- be able to succeed in Hollywood today?
