David Letterman announced last night, during a taping of his show, that he was was the victim of a $2 million extortion attempt and that he had had sexual relations with female members of staff.
According to a press release from Dave's people, three weeks ago the late-night host received a package from someone who claimed to have information about alleged sexual activity between the 62-year-old star and employees of his program.
"This morning, I did something I've never done in my life," Dave told his audience yesterday, "I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury."
"I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I had done ... The creepy stuff was that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show."
He continued, "My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would." He also said, "I feel like I need to protect these people – I need to certainly protect my family."
Dave had contacted the Manhattan District Attorney's special prosecution bureau, and agreed to help them catch the greedy culprit by participating in a sting operation. He even went as far as eventually meeting and handing a counterfeit $2 million check to the alleged extortionist – who was arrested on Thursday. In a statement, CBS said the individual in question was a producer on the network program 48 Hours.
Dave concluded his statement to his audience by saying that he hoped to protect his job at CBS.
Dave married his longtime girlfriend – and mother to his son -- Regina Lasko, in March. They had been dating for over 20 years.
