David Letterman Extortionist Says He's Innocent

Today's court case shed some very interesting light on the David Letterman extortion scandal.

TMZ reports that Robert Halderman, the CBS producer who tried to blackmail Dave out of $2 million, claims he is innocent of any wrongdoing and that he really just wanted to sell a screenplay to Letterman.

Halderman's lawyer told the court that the whole thing was intended to be "a pure commercial transaction," which involved him offering to sell the talk-show host exclusive rights to a movie script.

On a more salacious note, Halderman is making allegations that his ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Birkitt, was involved with Letterman far longer than Letterman and his spokesperson originally implied. According to TMZ, Halderman's lawyer asserted that the relationship continued "unabated" through at least this past summer. (Letterman married Regina Lasko, his girlfriend of 23 years, in March of this year.)

Additionally, the lawyer says his client "discovered evidence that Letterman had created and fostered an environment of workplace sexual misconduct that under any definition, amounted to actionable sexual harassment."
