SPOILER ALERT: If you don't want to know anything about the potential plot revelation of The Dark Knight Rises, don't read on!
During a chat with Anne Hathaway on Thursday night's installment of The Late Show with David Letterman, David Letterman got himself into hot water with movie fans.
"And in the end, Batman is dead," he cheekily told the actress in an is-he-or-isn't-he-serious way. "Daaave!" scolded Hathaway, who plays Catwoman in the much-anticipated movie (which hits theaters on July 20). And the audience was left wondering whether Letterman had just spoiled the movie's ending. Watch the clip below:
It's entirely possible that Letterman was merely being irreverent and funny, which is, after all, what this guy has built his career on. But this particular subject is a touchy one among fans of the Batman franchise, because rumors about the film's details have been circulating for months. Batman's demise, obviously, would be big news.
"I'm not watching it but apparently people are telling me David Letterman SPOILED the end of The Dark Knight Rises," tweeted Peter Sciretta of SlashFilm. He later added: "1. no idea what he said. 2. he probably screened the film before his interview with Hathaway 3. i have no idea how it ends so can't verify."
"You know this is a whole thing," Hathaway said about the ongoing controversy.
