Daytime Emmy Awards: Anderson Cooper Sings, 'General Hospital' Wins

Today and Live with Regis & Kelly also raked in the awards at the annual awards show on June 23

Host Anderson Cooper kicked off the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on June 23 with a humorous duet with another daytime icon: none other than Sesame Street's Oscar the Grouch!

"I hate daytime. It's the worst time of the day!" Oscar the Grouch complained to Cooper. So why did he even bother to show up? Because "Elmo was busy," Oscar quipped. Funny little green guy!

After some comedic banter about the merits of daytime television, Anderson and Oscar (sounds like the name of a new CNN show, doesn't it?) launched into a duet about all of the memorable things that have occurred on daytime TV, from Luke and Laura's General Hospital wedding to Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah's couch. Watch below!

The "What's so great about daytime?" Oscar the Grouch song set the tone for an awards show filled with reminders of daytime's greatest.

Speaking of Luke and Laura, Anthony Geary was the first winner of the night, picking up his seventh Daytime Emmy for playing Luke Spencer on General Hospital. The outstanding lead actor in a drama series winner, 65, is the only daytime actor to ever score seven Emmys for a soap opera role.

Although The Bold and the Beautiful's Heather Tom nabbed the lead actress in a drama Emmy, General Hospital won for outsanding drama and swept the supporting actor categories, with Jonathan Jackson and Nancy Lee Grahn winning for their roles on the ABC series.

"It's been 19 years since I started as Lucky Spencer, and I feel the same as I did at 11 years old," Jackson, 30, gushed.

But it was the morning shows that provided the night's biggest drama. Despite ratings competition from ABC's Good Morning America and the rumors circulating about Ann Curry's probable replacement as co-anchor of Today, NBC's esteemed series still picked up the Emmy for best morning show.

Live with Regis & Kelly hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa were honored with their first Emmy for best entertainment talk show as well as outstanding talk show hosts -- a lovely career-capper for Philbin, who bid the show farewell in November.
