When the nominations for the 38th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (CBS, June 19, 8 p.m. ET) were announced Wednesday, the Academy of TV Arts and Sciences heaped lots of love on ABC's General Hospital (which received 21 nods in all) and CBS's The Young and the Restless (which snagged 20 nods).
Given the shaky state of daytime soaps right now, the live broadcast from Las Vegas will no doubt be bittersweet for its actors and fans alike -- especially those still mourning the just-canceled All My Children (which earned 13 nods) and One Life to Live (which earned 12 nods).
All My Children is in the running for best soap, alongside The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital. If this well-loved and long-running show wins, just imagine the tears and indignation at the podium! Host Wayne Brady better be ready with some tissues.
Despite all the fanfare leading up to the May 25 series finale of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the talk-show queen won't be going out on top, awards-wise. The Ellen DeGeneres Show received the most recognition (12 nods), while Oprah earned less than half that (just five) -- and was snubbed in the best talk show host and best talk show categories. Of course, Oprah still commands the biggest ratings, which -- let's be honest -- is the best reward.
The race for best talk show host will come down to Dr. Oz, Kelly Ripa and Regis Philbin, Rachael Ray and the physicians on The Doctors, and the women of The View. Will the soon-to-retire Philbin win the day, as a tribute to his long career? Or will he get snubbed, allowing him to throw one of his comedic fits for the camera?
In fact, it seems odd that Philbin isn't getting a lifetime achievement award, given his several decades on daytime TV. But that honor will go to game show veterans Pat Sajak and Alex Trebek -- both of whom have logged plenty of hours in the daytime trenches.
