Coffee Filter Fireworks

What You’ll Need: Basket-style coffee filters, pipe cleaners (chenille stems), red and blue watercolor paint, a paintbrush, scissors, paper towels

Ages: 5 and up

Use some of your (many) white coffee filters and let your kid create this fun centerpiece for your backyard BBQ. Start by placing a filter on a few paper towels and painting it red. Repeat with new filters, alternating colors (leave some white, paint a few blue, red, or a combination) and let them dry. Without piercing the center, cut strips all around one filter to create ‘petals’. Next, cut a 1½-inch piece from one of the pipe cleaners and set it aside. Poke the rest of the pipe cleaner into the middle of the filter until about 2 inches is showing. Flip the flower upside down, gather the petals around the pipe cleaner and secure them with the smaller piece. Turn the blossom back over and fluff the petals with your fingers. Repeat the piper cleaner steps with remaining painted filters, and then display your patriotic posies.
