Delayed Period: Are You Pregnant?

I am a week late with my period, but a pregnancy test two days ago was negative. My menstrual cycle is usually like clockwork. (I did recently stop taking the Pill.) If I don't start in another week, should I see my doctor or take another test? Do you think I'm pregnant?

Women who are very regular cyclers and who are having unprotected intercourse on a regular basis and then are suddenly one week late for a period, in my experience, are pregnant more times than not.

You, however, are just off oral contraceptives, which may cloud this prediction. Even though you had a normal menses after going off the pill, the pituitary -- hypothalmus -- ovarian cycle may still be under some subtle effects of the birth control pills.

I usually recommend a week's wait before the next test. If your test was a home pregnancy test, you may want to visit your care provider for another one -- perhaps a blood pregnancy test, which tends to be sensitive to a smaller amount of hCG.

I hope it turns out the way you want it to.
