In news that will come as a shock to absolutely no one, FOX has confirmed that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will join record producer L.A. Reid and the always delightful Simon Cowell at the judges' table for season 2 of the network's hit singing competition series The X Factor.
For some time, Spears and Lovato had been rumored as replacements for exiting judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul, but FOX made honest women out of the earstwhile Disney stars at its upfront presentation in New York City Monday, bringing the duo out onto the stage for their official unveiling as cast members. (Spears was so pumped that she tweeted out the above photo of her and her new co-judging family.)
"I'm so excited about this whole experience," gushed 30-year-old Spears, who reportedly scored a $15 million payday for signing on the dotted line (X marks the spot, indeed). "It's going to be so much fun and so different from anything I've ever done. I'm ready to find a true star."
Lovato, 19, seconded that emotion. "I am totally stoked to be here," the former Sonny with a Chance star added. "I'm excited to represent my generation and I'm ready to find the winner."
While Cowell, 52, didn't exactly come right out and say it, the addition of these two young pop stars to the show sends a clear message: The X Factor is keen to capture that teen-to-twentysomething demo it missed in its first go-around and, in so doing, potentially dwarf American Idol and The Voice as the reality singing competition juggernaut. Will the addition of two popular pop stars on the comeback trail help Simon steal his former dawg Randy Jackson's thunder, knock the perfectly groomed stubble off Adam Levine's smiling face and give Cowell score another No. 1 hit? We'll have to wait until fall to find out.
