Demi Lovato might be Latina by heritage, but the half-Mexican singer admits she doesn't know Spanish "at all." The 19-year-old star, whose new album Unbroken skyrocketed to the top spot on iTunes Tuesday, confessed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon that she's definitely not bilingual.
The actress-singer performed a Spanish and English version of her song "Skyscraper" for the ALMA (American Latinos Media Arts) awards ceremony earlier this month. But when Jimmy Fallon casually asked on Wednesday night's show if she speaks Spanish, she quickly replied "not at all!"
The late-night host then asked how she got through the song. "I didn't know what the heck I was saying," said Lovato, who won the Favorite TV Actress ALMA for her role in Sonny With A Chance.
In fact, she was so nervous about flubbing the Spanish half of her lyrics -- which she had memorized -- that she made sure there was a back-up plan: "...my brain like would not memorize it. The day before, I was like I might need a teleprompter!"
"While I'm gliding through fog in a tight, red dress, I'm reading a teleprompter, trying to look graceful just praying to God that I don't fall in my dress," Lovato said of her performance.
Luckily, she pulled it off!
