Demi Lovato has been through a lot in the past couple of years, and for the most part she's been open about her past struggles with substance abuse and eating disorders. But she's been relatively quiet about her issues with cutting until now.
"There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin -- that if I didn’t do something physical to match the way I felt inside, I would explode," Lovato, 19, says in Self magazine's August issue. "I cut myself to take my mind off that. I just didn't care what happened. I had no fear."
The X Factor judge says she now takes her psychological health seriously by having as much "me time" as possible.
"I make time for myself and meditate," she says. "I've spent the past two years getting over an eating disorder and issues like self-harming and bipolar disorder. I have to work on this stuff every day. I'm reminded of that whenever I eat or feel down."
The Disney alum also reveals something she has completely given up in order to make a positive change in her life: her cell phone.
"I haven't used my cell in three months!" says Lovato. "Subconsciously, it was a crutch. When a room gets quiet, what do you do? Grab your phone! Now I can sit and have conversations with people."
