Demi Moore to Play Gloria Steinem in Linda Lovelace Biopic

Moore will portray a feminist icon in the film, which stars Amanda Seyfried as the famed porn star. Plus, Adam Brody joins the cast!

Demi Moore has joined the cast of the porn-star biopic Lovelace -- but she won't be doffing her clothes to perform a Striptease. Taking on her first big-screen role since splitting with husband Ashton Kutcher, Moore will portray feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the film about Linda Lovelace (real name Linda Boreman), an adult-film superstar who later teamed up with Steinem to denounce porn.

The movie began shooting in December with Amanda Seyfried in the title role. And in a turn of events that's sure to excite (and perhaps confuse) fans of TV's The O.C.Adam Brody has also come aboard the production as X-rated actor Harry Reems, Lovelace's excellently mustachioed costar in the seminal 1972 adult film Deep Throat.

The unmitigated success of Deep Throat made Lovelace one of the first porn actresses to achieve mainstream fame. But she later condemned her oeuvre and became an anti-porn activist -- claiming her husband (played by Peter Sarsgaard in the movie) forced her into the adult-film industry. She died in a car crash in 2002.

Steinem, a journalist and founder of Ms. magazine, became a prominent face of the women's movement in the late 1960s and '70s. A vocal critic of pornography, Steinem helped give voice to Lovelace's shocking tale with a Ms. profile detailing how the actress was violently coerced into making adult films.

Lovelace's strong ensemble cast also includes Sharon Stone, Chris Noth, Wes Bentley, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale and Eric Roberts, who will play lie-detector expert Nat Laurendi. Laurendi famously questioned Boreman to fact-check her book Ordeal, and his interrogation will likely provide the framework for the cinematic recounting of the actress' life. James Franco is also reportedly set for a cameo as a young Hugh Hefner.

Lovelace will likely hit theaters sometime in 2012, while Inferno -- another Lovelace biopic, starring Malin Akerman and Matt Dillon -- is slated for a 2013 release.
