On Sunday's episode of ABC's Desperate Housewives, Gabrielle (Eva Longoria Parker) tosses her laundry basket to husband Carlos (Ricardo Chavira), and takes off. No, it's not another fiery blowup between them. Their daughter Celia (Daniela Baltodano) has chicken pox; and Gabrielle's never had them. "Chicken pox is dangerous for adults," says Carlos. "Go!"
Gabrielle is more than happy to move in temporarily with the gay couple next door, Bob (Tuc Watkins) and Lee (Kevin Rahm). And then, according to the press materials, "she is suddenly reminded of what it feels like to be single again."
Parties. Cosmos by the pitcher. Driving around in convertibles with guys. Curling up on the couch in your bathrobe for a facial mask and a chat with a friend. Remember when life was just a slice of heaven, back in the days before sick kids and laundry took over?
I'm willing to bet that most wives, desperate or not, have moments when they long for that time before monogamy and mortgage payments. Sometimes, you can't help but idealize what it was like on the other side of the fence—even if you used to live there, and you know it wasn't all Cosmos.
I remember, though! Sometimes I'd order a Cosmo while partying in a club. But just as often I'd order one to help me through a dreary blind date. Worse than the blind date itself, though, was having to let the guy down easy afterwards. Of course, on other occasions, I had to be gracious while the guy tried to let me down easy. Finding your soul mate is hard work!
Knowing Gabrielle, by episode's end she'll have learned to appreciate her married life. No doubt something unpleasant will happen, and she'll go running back to her family. In the meantime, it will be fun to watch her sow a few oats across the street.
Do you think Gabrielle would be happier if she was single?
