Now that David Letterman has gotten his history-making infidelity disclosure out of the way, we're learning a lot more about the people involved. Robert Halderman, the man behind the $2 million extortion plot, is an Emmy-winning producer for CBS News show 48 Hours. (In light of his arrest, he has since been suspended from his job.) Halderman is also an ex-boyfriend of one of the Late Show staffers with whom Dave had an affair.
That staffer is a woman named Stephanie Birkitt, and according to TMZ, she was until very recently the extortionist's live-in girlfriend. She has been working on The Late Show as an assistant to Dave, and has appeared in several of the show's signature quirky skits. On the show's 16th anniversary, Birkitt interviewed Letterman for the Late Show newsletter.
One of the more revealing question-and-answer sections of the newsletter -- which has since been removed from the Late Show Web site -- seems to imply that Letterman had been to Birkitt's apartment, and was acquainted with her pets.
Stephanie said: "Everybody thinks cats are adorable. What are some of your favorite things about my cats?"
Letterman replied: "One time one of your cats was trapped between the storm door and the front door for two days. The cat survived. Let me clarify, I wasn’t happy that the kitty had been trapped. I was just happy the story had a joyous outcome. Every horizontal surface in your home is covered with cat hair."
Salacious details aside, everyone seems to have a different reaction to Dave's confession. The press seems to applaud Letterman's honesty and transparency on the matter. Some say his choice to handle it with humor was the best way to go. Others argue that in delivering the news the way he did made it seem like just another joke.
What do you think? Does Dave deserve points for coming clean, or will his record be scarred no matter what? Chime in below!
