Diapering your baby: Safety checklist

• Newborns typically wet at least six to eight diapers a day; if your baby's wetting fewer diapers, call your baby's health care provider.

• Once your baby passes meconium stools, normal bowel movements will be seedy, yellow and mustardlike in a breastfed baby, and firmer and darker in a formula-fed baby.

• Breastfed newborns should be stooling at least twice a day (and may stool following each feeding).

• Formula-fed babies often stool less frequently than breastfed babies. Call your baby's health care provider if baby's stools seem unusually hard or dry.

• Enjoy diaper-changing time -- it's a special chance for you to talk with your baby.
