Did David 'Not Gay!' Archuleta Overreact on Twitter?

With some defensive-sounding messages to fans, the 'American Idol' alum tries clarifying why he was spotted in a gay club

Crooning cutie David Archuleta reportedly went to a gay club in New York City over the weekend -- which, apparently, put his wholesome image in jeopardy. The Americal Idol finalist (who placed second to winner David Cook in 2008) decided he'd better explain himself to fans....and fast.

The day after his night out on the town, the 19-year-old singer has taken his case to Twitter: "Hey guys just wanted to clear something up real quick lol. Last night in New York I got invited to go and see my friend Charice perform."

Archuleta added a few more tweets for good measure: "Mental note to self: always ask where before you go! Wasn't my kind of place lol, and I had no clue! I guess you live and learn…The upside was that Charice was awesome, and she has an incredible voice. Hope that clears things up! Been seeing some of the tweets... sheesh!... NO worries all, I wouldn't get into things like that intentionally haha...Charice is great and she didn't mean to do cause any harm haha. She apologized a lot after."

Apologized for inviting her friend to her performance? Our advice to David: You're very young to be in the suddenly-hugely-famous club that's increasingly crowded with American Idol finalists, so while we applaud the professional successes you've racked up while barely out of high school, we understand you're still learning a lot about life. Your latest lesson just may be that a simple night out with friends will actually escalate into a bona fide brouhaha if -- to paraphrase Shakespeare -- the Archie doth protest too much!

Next time you're concerned about fans wondering about your sexuality, consider shrugging it off and remaining a man of mystery! There's plenty of dignity in that choice. Getting defensive implies that going to a gay club is an offense that needs defending. Whatever venue you went to on a Saturday night, perhaps the best way to get fans to chill about it is to simply set that example first, and just chill out.

For now, since you're not someone who's dating in the public eye, admirers will be curious what your story is. Whenever you've got that figured out, just embrace it, and until then, don't worry about clarifying to people who you're not.
