Two days ago, we were feeling all warm and fuzzy about the news that Paul DelVecchio, a.k.a. Jersey Shore star DJ Pauly D, has a baby daughter. Well -- a few things have happened in the last two days to dampen those happy feelings. We still think fatherhood will be good for Pauly, and little Amabella is beyond adorable. But things between Pauly and his baby mama Amanda Markert are surprisingly bitter.
As we knew, Pauly's baby is the result of a one-night stand between the DJ and Markert, a cocktail waitress, in Las Vegas. After determining (via DNA test) that he was the real father, Pauly announced that he was "proud" to be a father and "excited to embark on this new part of my life."
Well -- it's not so simple. For one thing, Pauly and Amanda have already launched into a custody battle over five-month-old Amabella. Amanda is seeking child support, while Pauly, 33, wants some level of custody. Both seem like reasonable demands, but there's a lot of mistrust there. Pauly hasn't actually seen his little girl yet. And he worries that Amanda is treating his child like "a winning lottery ticket."
According to TMZ, Pauly is also concerned that Amanda might not be a fit mother -- because she has an older child by a different man, and because she once worked at Hooters. Apparently, waiting tables in a crop top automatically makes you a terrible parent, as does having a previous relationship. Sorry, Pauly; That's really dumb.
And yet we share some of his concerns about Markert. Not because of her employment history, but because of the way she's handling this whole baby-mama situation. For example, she's reportedly shopping around text messages from Pauly asking her to have an abortion, and offering to pay for it. That's a little bit shocking, but it's not hard to see where that impulse came from; he probably panicked when he found out a woman he barely knew was carrying his baby. However, if Amanda really did try to sell those text messages to media outlets? That seems pretty inexcusable. No wonder Pauly doesn't trust her.
On Thursday, after TMZ broke the text message story, Pauly wrote this on Twitter:
Sometimes in life things aren't planned and they may even scare you at first, but they end up being a blessing.— DJ Pauly D (@DJPaulyD) October 24, 2013
Amanda is also on Twitter, and it seems that she has her own concerns about how the media is treating their story. On Tuesday, she tweeted, "Public media is the devil. I can't understand how and why people are so cruel and negative! Give it up already! My poor, innocent daughter being exploited. People should be ashamed involving an infant." (To her credit, Amanda hid her tweets from the public on Thursday night.)
It seems like the major issue here is that these two don't know each other at all, and neither is sure how to proceed. Amanda seems concerned about her financial stability, which is making Pauly wary of her potential gold digging. Pauly wants to step up as a dad, but doesn't know how, so he's filing court papers, which puts Amanda on the defensive. It's too bad that these two couldn't get to know each other and work out a custody arrangement before the media descended. Hopefully, for Amabella's sake, they can figure out how to co-parent without making each other miserable.
