We know that Demi Lovato was dealing with a lot of personal and professional stress when she left the Jonas Brothers tour to check herself into a treatment center. If a single incident pushed her over the edge, it happened out of the public eye. That said, People is reporting that the final straw was an airplane brawl between Lovato, 18, and one of her back-up dancers.
According to sources, the trouble started when Lovato decided to stay out late one night and party with her back-up dancers. When word got back to her tour managers, they decided to take Demi aside and speak to her about her social habits.
"Demi reacted badly and perceived that someone on tour had told on her," says the magazine's insider.
The next day, Lovato confronted the dancer whom she guessed to be the snitch, and there was "a short, physical altercation" -- although the fighting was "one-sided." Apparently, whatever violence Demi inflicted on her friend caused her to wake up and realize she had a problem.
"Afterwards, Demi felt awful about her behavior and realized she needed to take personal responsibility for it," says the source. "Because of this, and because of the battles Demi has fought throughout her life, both she and her family realized she needed to take steps to get help immediately."
Though the story's vague details seem to hint at some kind of substance abuse ("partying"?), People's sources emphasize that Lovato is not in drug rehab. They also say that Lovato's ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas and his girlfriend Ashley Greene were not involved in Demi's bad weekend -- although E! Online is reporting otherwise.
For right now, Lovato's family is standing close by and protecting her secrets. On Wednesday, her mother and stepfather issued a statement thanking fans for the "outpouring of support we have received."
