Katie Couric may have dropped a major bombshell on her new daytime chat show.
During an interview with Jennifer Lopez (airing today), the Katie host asked what J.Lo thought of the new American Idol judges' panel. But here's the thing: The new judges' panel has not been announced. Did Couric just spill the beans on one of TV's most closely guarded secrets?
Couric casually asked the former Idol judge to share her opinions about the new lineup, but Lopez (wisely!) hesitated. "Did they announce?" she asked cautiously.
Katie assured her that the list had been announced. She then revealed that the new Idol judges are Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson. Now, we know that Mariah is definitely in, since she's the only judge who has been officially confirmed by producers. Minaj has been heavily rumored to be joining the show but has made no announcement. Likewise, Urban stirred up rumors that he was joining Idol by unexpecetedly quitting his gig on Australia's The Voice.
As for longtime cast member Jackson, all signs pointed to him staying on the show -- but many sources speculated that he'd want to move into a mentor role this season. On Tuesday, Simon Cowell tweeted that Jackson would be returning, suggesting that he'd remain a judge after all. When Couric said that Randy would be staying on the judges' panel, Lopez appeared to be relieved.
"Randy is! Oh thank god. I love Randy," she gushed. "I’m glad he’s doing it."
The singer-actress called the unconfirmed panel "an eclectic group," saying, "I think they all have something really different to offer so it should be interesting."
Interesting indeed -- but are Carey, Minaj, Urban and Jackson actually the new judges? FOX is refusing to confirm or deny, telling ABCNews.com, "Please note that the only confirmed judge for American Idol is Mariah Carey. No other judges have been announced at this time."
We're not sure if Couric has insider information (very possible), or if she's just been following the same rumors as the rest of us. Either way, the pressure is now on for Fox to make an official announcement. We'll be waiting with open ears!
