Did Taylor Swift Write "All Too Well" About Jake Gyllenhaal?

The country darling has not confirmed that Jake was her muse for the song, but she did admit that the song was a challenge to write because it was so personal

Taylor Swift doesn't like to reveal who her songs are about, but a source close to the singer-songwriter claims that one track from Red is definitely about Jake Gyllenhaal. According to Us Weekly, the song "All Too Well," in which Swift gets nostalgic about a failed relationship, was written about her 2010 romance with the actor.

The ballad was reportedly inspired by the Thanksgiving that Taylor spent with Jake at his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal's Brooklyn home. (The lyrics include the lines "Left my scarf there at your sister's house/ And you still got it in your drawer even now.") The song also mentions a fall road trip ("We're singing in a car getting lost upstate/ the autumn leaves falling down like pieces in their place"), which may refer to Taylor and Jake's apple-picking date in Hopewell Junction, N.Y. (about 90 minutes north of the city).

The singer has admitted that the song was challenging to write, because of its personal nature. "'All Too Well' was the hardest to write because it took me a long time to filter through everything I wanted to say," she told Good Morning America. "It started out being a 10-minute song, which you can't put on an album. I had to filter it down to a story that could work in the form of a song."

Another clue that points to Gyllenhaal: the capital letters hidden in the liner notes spell out "maple lattes," which is what Taylor & Jake were seen drinking during that Brooklyn Thanksgiving weekend.

Though Swift usually clams up when asked to get specific about her song subjects (see her recent appearance on Ellen), she's quick to acknowledge that they're all about actual people. In a Q&A for this weekend's The New York Times Magazine, the singer admitted that she once broke a promise never to write about an ex-boyfriend. "The only time that has ever crossed someone’s mind was when we were in the process of breaking up," Swift recalled. "Of course I was like, 'Oh, don’t worry, I won’t.' And then I did."

"Look, it’s not like it was written somewhere in the fine print that I write songs about my life," she continued. "If we break up, I’m going to write about it. But I’m probably also going to write about when I fell in love with you. So there’s an upside."

We'd say that any guy who dates Swift has been given fair warning! Speaking of which, it seems like she may have a new man in her life: Harry Styles from One Direction. Swift was brought the boy band heartthrob along to the The X Factor set on Friday, where they were spotted holding hands by host Mario Lopez. (Swift is performing on the talent competition this Thursday.)

The two young stars were rumored to have had a brief fling in April, which may or may not have inspired the Red song "I Knew You Were Trouble." Guess if Taylor has already written a break-up song about you, you've got nothing to lose!
