Do I need to totally give up caffeine?
Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, cocoa and some drugs. If consumed in large quantities, it can cause irritability, nervousness and insomnia as well as low-birth-weight babies. Caffeine is a diuretic and can cause dehydration, which can be dangerous during pregnancy. Some studies have shown that caffeine intake during pregnancy can cause withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. It's wise to limit your caffeine intake, keeping it under 300 milligrams a day, until more definitive studies are done. Learn more.

Do I need to avoid all alcohol during pregnancy?
The problem with recommending any safe level of alcohol intake during pregnancy is that the safe levels of episodic drinking have not been clearly defined. With research showing a potential for fetal damage and long-term consequences, it is prudent to avoid alcohol while pregnant. Learn more.
