Diet in Pregnancy: iVillage Pregnancy & Parenting

How can I lose the post-baby weight?
Post-pregnancy weight loss can be tough! Though it sounds a little counterintuitive, you need to take in at least 1,500 calories, if not more, while simultaneously increasing the intensity and duration of your exercise. You should try adding some weight training to your program in order to build muscle. Muscle operates at a much higher metabolic rate than fat and so burns calories all day long. Remember, the slower the weight loss, the healthier you will be -- and the more apt the weight is to stay off. Learn more.

Can I lose weight while nursing my new baby?
Yes, many mothers find it easier to lose weight while breastfeeding than at any other time. While nursing, a calorie intake of at least 1,800 calories a day is recommended. Very low-calorie diets, besides making you tired and cranky, may also affect your milk production. If you regularly exercise, you might want to start out consuming 2,200 calories a day.
