Digging Dogs

My dog is a digger! How can I make him stop? -- iVillager tiffkoz

Dog trainer Andrea Arden says:
Redirect Your Diggers! Digging is a very normal and natural doggie behavior. I talk to lots of people who want to completely stop their dogs from digging, which can be done, simply don't let your dog in the yard when you can't supervise and when you can keep them busy playing with toys and you. But, I prefer to direct their digging to an appropriate outlet. How about building a little digging pit for them? Get four two by fours and make a little square. Take them to it and show them you are burying great stuff in there (bones, toys). Get them thinking this is a really great spot to dig in, it is a treasure trove! Also, be sure to supervise them and direct them to their spot until the y have a strong habit of digging just there. If you ever do catch them digging anywhere else, simply redirect them to the right spot.
