The family that's in denial together, stays out of jail -- at least, that seems to be the Lohans' philosophy. Although Lindsay Lohan was very clearly sentenced to 90 days in prison for violating the terms of her probation, Lindsay doesn't think she's going -- and neither does mother Dina Lohan. In fact, Dina seemingly doesn't even think Lindsay did anything wrong!
In a new interview with Dina from In Touch magazine, she swears her daughter is "not going to be in that situation" (that situation, meaning jail) because "Lindsay is sober and she's fine."
"We're hoping it doesn't come to that," Dina says of her daughter's jail sentence. If she does go to jail, Dina says, Lindsay will be terrified ("she's claustrophobic"), she'll need to be hypnotized to stop smoking, and she may be in physical danger ("I would fear for her life."). Jail, Dina says, wouldn't help her daughter in the least -- not that she needs help.
"Jail doesn't help anyone no matter what problem you have -- unless you're a rapist or a murderer," Lindsay's mother states. "This wasn't a violent crime, but they're saying you miss a DUI class and have to go to jail for three months -- that's absurd."
Many would argue that drinking under the influence can turn into a violent crime indeed; Lindsay is lucky that she wasn't responsible for one of the 17,600 drunk driving deaths that took place the year of her arrest. But all of the Lohans seem to have an absolute terror of admitting their mistakes. They much prefer the version of the story where they're innocent victims of persecution; as Dina complains in the interview, "It's not easy being us."
Incidentally, Dina adds that, in fact, Lindsay wants to "open up her own rehab center... to help other kids and celebs." This would be a great next step for the 24-year-old actress, if she can first take responsibility for her own problems. As any 12-stepper knows, Step 1 is "Admit you're powerless over your addiction -- that your life has become unmanageable."
Perhaps in an effort to manage her life in the tumultuous days before her jail sentence starts, Lindsay Lohan has now been spotted checking into rehab in Los Angeles at a "sober living facility" founded by infamous O.J. Simpson defense attorney Robert Shapiro. Let's hope the seriousness of her situation will sink in for her there, as well as for her whole family.
