The Best DIY Couples Halloween Costumes: Kimye, Pac-Man + More!

Want to dress for Halloween together? One of these clever (and easy!) DIY couples costumes should do the trick

As the Halloween costume party invites begin to roll in, you can almost hear revelers everywhere cry out a collective, “But what am I going to wear?!” We say, grab your partner and opt for a costume made for two. Whether you go current pop culture (why, hello there, Christian Grey), classic cartoon (Popeye, what big arms you have!) or retro gamer (who doesn’t have Pac-Man fever?), dressing up is always more fun when you have a partner in crime.

Here are fun, creative ideas sure to win you that best costume prize:

Looking for a couples costume that’s spot on? Embody the evil -- yet super stylish -- Cruella de Vil. All you need is your fave LBD from your closet, a black scarf, red pumps and that distinctive half-black, half-white wig. And your partner? He’s a Dalmatian, of course. Keep it simple with a long-sleeved white T-shirt decorated with black felt spots, black shorts, headband ears and a little makeup on the nose. And if you ever wanted to keep your guy on a short leash? Well, here’s your chance.

Pac-Man Fever

Children of the ’80s will gobble up the idea of hitting the Halloween party dressed as Pacman and Ms. Pacman. Build your own costumes, DIY style, by taking a hint from the Julie Ann Art blog: Cut circles out of giant pieces of foam board, cutting out triangular shapes for the mouths, and covering in yellow felt topped with black and red felt for the details. Add straps to hang your creations from the shoulders and get ready to chase ghosts.

I Love Halloween

If you don’t stop for I Love Lucy reruns, we have to wonder about your sense of humor. Recreate one of TV’s favorite duos by dressing as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. For Lucy, grab a curly red wig, ’50s-style dress, apron and pearls. For Ricky, you’ll need a suit, Cuban-style fedora and a cigar. Oh, and make sure your man says, “Lucy, you've got some ’splainin to do!” Like, a lot.

Supercalifragilistic Costume

You’ll sweep up in the best costume category when you enter as Mary Poppins and Bert. And although you won’t be able to put these looks together as quickly as our favorite magical nanny, it’s pretty easy. Mary needs a white blouse, navy skirt, peacoat, boots, a red bowtie, a hat and, of course, her very important accessories: an umbrella and carpet bag. Chimney sweep Bert needs dark pants and a dark jacket, a red scarf, a newsboy-style hat, and his own very important accessory: a broom. Add black makeup for soot and spit-spot, off you go.

Going Grey

Looking for a hot costume idea? It doesn’t get much hotter than Fifty Shades of Grey. And this one won’t hurt a bit: You and your man dress in, you guessed it, shades of gray, and, naturally, your “Christian” will need a gray tie. Any, um, accessories you choose to add are strictly up to you.

Kiss and Make Up

Romantics will fall in love with this super cute and unique couples costume, based on the famous Life magazine photo from V-J Day in 1945. You dress all in white, he dresses in a Navy costume. And then you get to kiss all night. Brilliant!

May These Costumes Be Ever in Your Favor

No doubt about it, costumes based on The Hunger Games are trendy. But instead of going as the expected Katniss and Peeta, dress up as the uber-fashion-forward Effie Trinket and the head Gamemaker Seneca Crane. Crane’s costume calls for red and black on top and tan pants, along with that crazy facial hair (which can be painted on if your guy isn't into growing -- and trimming -- his own beard). Effie’s look is all about a powdered wig with white makeup with bright pink pops of blush, eyeshadow and lipstick and tons of false eyelashes. Throw on a pink puffy dress and you’ll fit right in at the Capitol.

Strong to the Finich, This One Needs Spinach

Wanna go classic? It’s hard to beat Popeye and Olive Oyl. Go the easy route and buy a Popeye costume., or take the DIY route, using blue pants and a homemade sailor shirt. Add a sailor hat, draw on tattoos and don’t forget a pipe (plus laugh like “a-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah!" all night). Olive Oyl is a bit easier: a red sweater with a white collar, long black skirt and that ink black hair will do the trick. Carry a can of spinach and, if you want to include your baby, dress him in a red sleep sack and -- BAM! -- he’s Swee Pea. Sweet, right?

The One That You Want

Timeless couples: Antony and Cleopatra, Romeo and Juliet, Danny and Sandy. Grease fans will be hopelessly devoted to dressing as Rydel High’s cutest couple. You can go sweet Sandra Dee-Sandy -- hair in a flip with a wide ribbon, ‘50s-style dress, bobby socks and saddle shoes -- along with reformed bad boy-Danny -- letterman sweater over black jeans and T-shirt. But we prefer “Tell me about it, stud” Sandy, in skin-tight black pants, off-the-shoulder top and red heels with big, curly hair and T-Bird Danny with black leather jacket. All that's left is to learn the hand jive.

Royal Wedding

If you weren’t consumed with Kate and Will's wedding, and, more recently, the birth of their prince, we call liar, liar. For a posh pairing, dress as our favorite royal couple. For Kate, find a thrift store bridal gown or buy one at a costume shop (if you don’t have long brown hair already, you’ll need a wig). For William, you’ll need a red top coat and a blue sash. Get detailed using felt or fabric to create the gold trim and medals. Cheerio!

Keeping Up With Kimye

Feelin’ flashy? Bring on the bling and dress like tabloid cover stars Kim Kadashian and Kanye West. Kim may be blondish now, but she’s more known for her long, lush locks, so a dark wig will help. Enhance your figure with butt pads and a stuffed bra, and wear tight pants (leggings are easy) and your highest heels. You’ll know he’s Kanye when he wears the rapper’s slotted glasses, a T-shirt with a blazer and a gold chain or two. Just be prepared for paparazzi.

Meet the Flintstones

Sure, you could go the Fred and Wilma route, but Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm is just cuter. If getting artsy-craftsy seems too stone age for you, you can find the baby girl and boy costumes at shops -- but this blog offers DIY directions, too. Pebbles requires a white-painted dog bone for the top-of-head ponytail, a green T-shirt decorated with black felt triangles and ripped shorts. Bamm-Bamm gets an orange toga and baseball cap, also decorated with black felt, an animal-print sash and a club. We call it a Yabba Dabba Do!

American Gothic

Sea Kettle

Does the idea of living art appeal to you? Take on Grant Wood’s iconic “American Gothic” painting this Halloween. He’ll need overalls, a black jacket, wire-rim glasses and a pitchfork. She’ll need a black dress with a white collar and cameo, plus an apron and her hair tied back in a bun. Now, the pièce de résistance? Carry an open frame to pose inside of. Museum-worthy, we think.

Spice World

Cul de Sac Cool

She’s a Spice Girl-turned fashionista. He’s a soccer star-turned underwear model. Together, Victoria and David Beckham make a beautiful couple -- and an excellent costume pairing. To emulate Posh, you need a bobbed wig, the biggest sunglasses you can find (like, gigantic), and your most fab LBD and highest heels (oh, and you’re not to allowed to smile. Ever). For Becks, a soccer jersey (preferably from the Los Angeles Galaxy), gelled hair, temp tattoos and shades will do the trick. So, so posh.
