I love the idea of giving handmade gifts for the holidays, but with the amount of time it takes to slave away on presents for friends and family... sometimes it's not the most practical. That's why I love this semi-handmade option so much. It won't take much time to create and you can customize designs and colors easily, so all of your friends receive something uniquely stitched just for them. It's the perfect size to grab when they’re headed out for some holiday drinks or a party.

What you'll need:

A plain clutch (Look for one that is fairly thin and unlined if possible. It will be much easier to poke a needle through. I found this one at H&M.)
Leather cording
Fabric pen
Fabric measuring tape
Fabric scissors
Large sewing needle

Step 1

Measure the length of your clutch and divide that number by five. This will determine how many inches are between each hole that you make in your clutch. So, for example, if your clutch is 10-in. long, you would divide by five to get 2-in. Now, starting about 2/3 of the way down, use a fabric pen to make five marks, evenly spaced, across your clutch. Be sure to space them out based on the measurement you originally came up with. Repeat this process again two-thirds from the top of your clutch.

Step 2

Use fabric scissors to cut small slits through the clutch where the marks are. You will have a total of ten slits to cut. Note: If you having trouble cutting through the material, pinch the fabric where the mark is and then cut.

Step 3

Tie a knot at the end of your leather cording and place the opposite end through the needle’s eye. Starting on the left hand side, poke the leather cording through, beginning on the inside of the clutch, so that the knot remains concealed within the purse.

Step 4

Bring the needle through, pull taut, then continue weaving between the holes, moving left to right in a diagonal pattern.

Step 5

Now, repeat step four, moving in the opposite direction to create an X. Tie off the end inside the clutch.

You're done!
