Do Rings Mean Marriage? Not for Katy Perry and Scarlett Johansson

Though both ladies were spotted sporting new bling, neither star is walking down the aisle

Sometimes it's easy to forget that a ring can just be a nice present and not mean an impending marriage. Both Katy Perry and Scarlett Johansson were spotted wearing new bling on their left-hand ring fingers, and both are said to not be planning weddings to their respective beaus.

For Perry, the drama all started when she was seen wearing a sparkly new ring during a Valentine's Day dinner with boyfriend John Mayer. So obviously they're tying the knot, right? Wrong: The ring actually was just a nice Valentine's Day gift.

It turns out the present was created by jewelry designer Daniel Gibbings as a one-of-a-kind gift for Perry. Gibbings' rep confirmed to People that Mayer picked the ring out himself, and was "really super nice" while doing so.

Then there's Johansson, who, despite reports to the contrary, is not engaged to French journalist Romain Dauriac. The couple has been dating since November 2012 -- not long after she split with ex Nate Naylor. Her rep confirms to E! News that they're not getting married and that Johansson is in no rush to tie the knot again. She allegedly just wore the pear-cut diamond ring on her left hand because she felt like it.

So it turns out that it's way more fun getting fancy jewelry as a present than buying it for yourself. (Who would've thought?) Then again, maybe celebrities who are frequently photographed should exercise a bit more caution about the placement of their flashy rings.
