She's got a soulful voice that rouses audiences and an earthy style all her own. But is Crystal Bowersox cut out to be an American Idol winner? The 24-year-old single mom is the odds-on favorite to win, yet she's already spent one performance night in the hospital (from diabetes complications) and, reportedly, may have nearly quit the competition during "a moment of doubt." iVillage readers want to know: Is Crystal Bowersox cracking under the pressure?
On iVillage's American Idol message board, one commenter (luvdchelsea) observes that Bowersox, while talented, has been inconsistent: "One week she looks great and the next you can tell she doesn't feel the greatest." She also speculates that watching Katie Stevens get voted off was hard on Bowersox, and another commenter (cmjenas) agrees: "You can see each week during eliminations how hard it is on her to see people go."
Other readers (such as tooner2006) believe Bowersox, who has said she doesn't own a TV, was unprepared for life in the Idol spotlight: "I think that Crystal is in a little over her head....I don't think she realized how much her life would change and she doesn't like it."
Last night's intense performance of "People Get Ready" will do little to settle the argument. While Bowersox brought the house down with her soaring vocals, she ended the song by choking back tears. And when she tried to borrow Ryan Seacrest's handkerchief to dry her eyes, and discovered it may have been sewn to his suit, she laughed, "Hollywood!" as if she still found it unsettling to be in the big Hollywood spotlight she's now in.
