Every once in a while, a plum role comes along for women in Hollywood that doesn't already have Angelina Jolie or Meryl Streep attached to it. The ensuing casting bonanza (see: Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) is often surprising and always fun to watch. Up next for grabs? Another famous woman from literature: socialite Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's sure-to-be-huge adaptation of The Great Gatsby.
Unlike Dragon Tattoo, Luhrmann doesn't seem to be reaching for a nearly-unknown. With Leonardo DiCaprio attached to play Jay Gatsby, and Tobey Maguire signed on as narrator Nick Carraway, the Aussie filmmaker already has a few big names on his wishlist.
According to Deadline.com, Luhrmann had The Town star Rebecca Hall do a table read for Daisy recently with his two leading men. But while she's still in the running, the director would reportedly like to see DiCaprio read with several other leading ladies as he workshops his script over the next few weeks in New York.
Among the names also being tossed around include Natalie Portman, who recently dropped out of Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams and Scarlett Johansson. It will be interesting to see who brings the literary character to life!
