Does Sex on the First Date Still Make You a Slut?

New sex survey reveals what men really think about women who put out

Remember that time you got naked on a first date, it was super awkward the next morning and -- surprise, surprise -- he never called again? Turns out, his disappearing act has less to do with your doing the deed so soon and everything to do with the fact that he just wasn’t that into you, according to a Cosmopolitan sex survey, inspired by the new dating guide, It’s Okay to Sleep with Him on the First Date.

After polling more than 1,000 18-to-35-year-olds, Cosmo editors have declared that no sex on the first date is as outdated as not wearing white after Labour Day. Close to 39 per cent of women in the survey have indulged in some between-the-sheets action on date numero uno. Not exactly an overwhelming majority, but we’ll give it to them nonetheless.

The survey also found that while 82.6 percent of women still believe men will think less of them if they give it up on the first date, 67 percent of guys said they "absolutely don’t" judge a lady for getting horizontal with them after a single night of dinner and drinks. So maybe the notion isn't totally outdated...at least for women.

The real reason a guy doesn't call the next day, according Jeff Wilser, coauthor of It’s Okay to Sleep with Him on the First Date is because he wasn't that interested in you to begin with, even though that didn't stop him from getting some booty. And why should it, if you’re willing? To be honest, I have more than a few female friends who consider it an unsuccessful date if the evening doesn’t end with a romp in the sack -- especially if the night involves anything more potent than a glass or two of wine.

I am actually among those who believe sex on the first date is not necessarily going to be a deal breaker. Both times I had sex on a first date I ended up in a long-term relationship. Likewise, my best friend slept with her now-husband on their first date.

Still, to say that the no-sex-on-a-first-date rule is completely outdated strikes me as wishful thinking, considering the poll’s numbers. If you want to sleep with a dude on the first date, by all means, do so. But I think you still have to be prepared for the fact that -- right or wrong -- the guy might write you off afterwards. Then again, some of us women might just do the same.
