My 9 month old Lab mix keeps eating leather shoes. Is there any way we can break him of this bad habit? --iVillager littlewurm15
Dog Trainer Amy Robinson says:
Teach your dogs the OUT command, which means they let go of an object held in their mouth. Start by keeping the leashes on in the house. Hold the pup's leash and hand him a toy you know he will grab. Then wave a tasty treat like lunchmeat directly under his nose, as you say OUT only once. It may take a minute, but he will opt for the treat and drop the toy. Praise him and repeat. When he gets pretty good, use a shoe as the toy and repeat several times. Now, when he play-bites you, say OUT and he will remember it means "let go". As for your shoes, put the dogs in a confined area like the kitchen behind a gate, or in crates. You can try just putting the shoes away, but they may find another chew target.
