On March 11th I hosted a sneak peek preview party for my first cookbook Donatella Cooks: Simple Food Made Glamorous, which is coming out on April 13th. I had the party in the private back room of my restaurant Mia Dona. We put together a tasting menu that featured some of my favorite recipes from the book. Many of the recipes from my cookbook are actually served at Mia Dona, so it worked out perfectly.
Upon entering the room, guests were hit with the delicious aroma of truffle oil and immediately went in search of the origin…it was the popcorn. I love bling-ing out popcorn, so we served 2 types of gussied-up kernels; the aforementioned truffle oil variety, and one with rosemary, garlic and olive oil. Sometimes at home for entertaining I’ll glitz it up with edible gold dust—always seems to be a hit.
We served one of my other favorites—my mom’s tried and true recipe for meatballs. Even today, it is still the best meatball I have ever had. (The secret is no breadcrumbs.) We then served hot little crocks of my updated version of Mac and Cheese. It has four types of white Italian cheeses and egg white folded in to make it like a soufflé. We finished the meal with demi-cups of Nutella hot chocolate and airy lemon ricotta fritters. Everyone stayed until the end!
On a personal note, the book is dedicated to my parents. It was so meaningful that they could be there with me on such an important night. It was an extra special evening for them too as it was also their 48th wedding anniversary.
Here’s the recipe for the Mac and Cheese. I hope you and your family love it!
