Doubt

Cast: Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams
Release date: In select theaters December 12
Why you should see it: John Patrick Shanley adapts this big-screen version of his play about a Catholic school principal (Streep) who suspects that a priest at her school (Hoffman) may have sexually molested a student. Complicating the matter is the young nun at the school (Adams) who may have proof of the priest's actions—which comes out during a heated confrontation.
Box office bottom line: Streep + Hoffman = critical success, and buzz is that while Streep and Hoffman are shoo-ins for Oscar noms, Adams may prove to be such a scene stealer that she'll earn her first Oscar win. As for whether or not audiences will hit theaters to see the film, that remains to be seen. Its controversial subject matter doesn't exactly fill anyone with holiday spirit, though it's likely to be a popular DVD release.
